Research is a systematic rigorous investigation of a situation or a problem in order to generate a new knowledge or to validate the existing knowledge. Research is mainly divided into two categories of Quantitative and Qualitative research.

Qualitative research is primarily exploratory. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, believes and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypothesis. The Quantitative research is further divided into 4 main types; Descriptive, Correlational, Quasi-experimental and Experimental.

Descriptive research (also known as statistical research) refers to research that provides an accurate portrayal of characteristics of a particular situation or problem. Co-relational research refers to the systematic investigation of the relationships among two or more variables, without necessarily determining cause and effect. Experimental research is objective, systematic & controlled investigation for the purpose of predicting and controlling phenomena and examining probability and causality among selected variables, thus establishing cause-and-effect relationship. Quasi-experimental research shares similarities with the traditional experimental research method but it lacks the element of random assignment to treatment or control. In some cases the researcher may have control over assignment to treatment.
